Secure Shell (SSH) allows you to remotely access and manage your VPS using a command-line interface. One of the most popular tools for SSH access on Windows is PuTTY. This guide will show you how to download PuTTY and connect to your VPS.

Enviroweb provides unmanaged VPS hosting. We cannot recover lost login credentials or assist with PuTTY installation or usage. Please ensure you keep your login information secure and backed up.
Step 1: Download PuTTY
1. Go to the official PuTTY website:
https://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/latest.html
2. Download the version for your operating system. For most users, the 64-bit Windows Installer is recommended.
3. Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions to install PuTTY.
Step 2: Open PuTTY and enter your VPS login details
1. Launch PuTTY from your desktop or Start menu.
2. In the Host Name (or IP address) field, enter the IP address of your VPS.
3. Leave the Port set to 22 (default for SSH).
4. Ensure the Connection type is set to SSH.
5. Click Open to begin the session.
Step 3: Login to your VPS
When prompted, enter the username provided in your VPS welcome email (this is not always "root", but typically has root-level privileges).
Then enter your password when prompted. You won’t see the password as you type — this is normal.
Tip: The "right-click" button on your mouse will automatically paste the most recent text in your clipboard in the PuTTY terminal window.
Once logged in, you'll have full access to your server’s terminal.
Note: If logging in for the first time, you will be prompted to change the password for your account. Please store this securely, as Enviroweb cannot reset or recover lost login credentials. If access is lost and no other sudo-enabled user exists, you may be required to reinstall your server, resulting in full data loss unless external backups are in place.
